William J. Cook (Cookie)
William J. Cook (Cookie) was born at Kent General Hospital on March 18, 1935, to the late William Cook and Amy Crossley Cook.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Phillips; brother, Allen Cook (former Senator); sister, Betty Edmondson; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Walls; and great-granddaughter, Lena McClucas-Cook.
He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Louise Cook, of 64 years together; son, Randall J. Cook (Tandi) of Camden, Delaware; two grandchildren, Brandy Cook, and Andrew Cook; one great-granddaughter, Lily Marie Cook; sister-in-law, Nancy Cook; his brother-in-laws, William, Franklin and Clifton Shane; and loving nephews, nieces, extended family, and friends.
Cookie met Louise during their high school years at Smyrna High and he played football for the Smyrna Eagles. They married on July 6, 1957. He then enlisted in the Army and was deployed for two years in Germany accompanied by his wife.
Upon his return back home to Delaware, he held a variety of positions in construction, farming, and trucking, prior to his 30 year career with the State of Delaware, Fish and Wildlife as manager of the Little Creek Wildlife area before retiring. He had a license to drive almost any vehicle over the road and has his own pilots license and flew his family on several occasions to different destinations. After retirement, he began his second career with long-time family friend, Jack Whitby. Cookie managed the approximate 350 acre farm area near Hazlettville, Delaware, known as Whitby Farms. Cookie and Louise have lived on the farm for over 30 years.
One of his favorite pastimes was going to the races as he enjoyed watching Nascar and Indianapolis 500. He visited Daytona 500 yearly whenever able and worked at the Dover Racetrack for several years.
He was also an active member of the Delaware State Fair and a director for over 35 years.
Cookie's most enjoyable time was telling stories to all his family and friends. He filled you with joy with his jolly laugh, never had a complaint, and always looked to the positive side of life.
Memorial Service Saturday, November 13, 2021, 2 p.m. at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, Del., where friends may gather beginning at 11 a.m.
