SMYRNA - William C. "Bill" Withrow, of Smyrna, died on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Kent General Hospital in Dover. He was 68. Bill, the son of the late Eura Alden Withrow and Emma Evelyn (Crowe) Withrow, was born at home on Aug. 20, 1942, in Danaese, W.Va., and was raised in Elton, W.Va. In 1960 he graduated Salutatorian from Sandstone High School in Sandstone, W.Va. The day after graduation he moved to Newport News, Va., and began his apprenticeship in the shipyard. In 1970 he moved north and became a member of the Union Boilermaker's National Transient Lodge. In 1976, he and his family settled in Smyrna, although he traveled extensively throughout his career. Well known and respected in his trade he retired in 2002 after 32 years. The next three years he worked for Rutkowski Brothers as a farmer, which he thoroughly enjoyed as a change of pace. After completely retiring in 2005 he spent his time with his family and good ol' friends. Bill was a member of the New Castle Moose Lodge and The Sons of the American Legion, David C. Harrison Post #14. He loved hunting, fishing, and was a NASCAR fan, favoring Ford drivers. He enjoyed watching many different sports but routed for West Virginia and Duke Basketball. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Bueren Berry, Orville Hicks, and John Goncalves; and a nephew, Wayne Hicks. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 38 years, Joan M. Withrow; two daughters, Pamela Sue Withrow of Hampton, Va., and the light of his life, Victoria Lynn "Vicky" Withrow and her fiance Marty Dale Martin Sr.; his step-son, who he loved and was very proud of, Robert J. Reiss, Jr., Major, USAF, and his wife Candice of Glen Burnie, Md.; five step granddaughters "Pop-Pop's Girls", Rachael, Christina, Valerie, Becky, and Cara; three sisters, Betty Hicks of Buckroe Beach, Va., Virginia Berry of Lockbridge, W.Va., and Jo Ann Goncalves of Newport News, Va.; and two brothers, Jim Withrow and his wife Amy of Wytheville, Va., and Jack Withrow and his wife Cecile of Kingsland, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews. He especially enjoyed babysitting Xena, Vicky's Timber Wolf. Services will be held Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel located on 29 S. Main St. Smyrna, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
