William Alfred Couch

LINCOLN - William Alfred Couch, passed away on Tuesday Aug. 1, 2017, in Spokane, Wash. His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
Bill was born Nov. 7, 1928, in Buffalo, N.Y. to Matthew Roy and Winifred Olive (Wilson) Couch. After graduating from Riverside High school in Buffalo N.Y., he attended some college, and finally enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the Air Force as a crew chief for a B52 and as a Training Instructor. He, was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in the Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Air Force he attended Florida State University where he receive a BS in Recreation He married Elinor Saulsbury in 1971. After graduating, Bill worked in a civilian capacity for the US Army as a recreation director, serving at army bases in Alabama and California until his retirement in 1990. After retiring, he and Elinor moved to Lincoln. Bill was a national champion sculler as a youth and won many medals competing in the Senior Olympics for swimming. Bill enjoyed motorcycling, once traveling the entire border of the U.S. with his beloved Elinor on the back of his motorcycle. They were members of the Salinas Rambler motorcycle club for many years. He also loved camping and was a member of the Good Sam RV Club.
Bill is survived by his five children, Louis Hetrick, Peter Edwards, Karen Roberts, Barbara Hehl, and Diana Evans; two stepsons, Albert Saulsbury and Wayne Saulsbury; twenty-five grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his half brother, George Couch; his sister, Mary Lou Bingham; and his beloved wife, Elinor.
