Walter Wise "Corkey" Phillips, 93
MILLSBORO - Walter Wise "Corkey" Phillips of Millsboro passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare, Lewes. He was 93.
Mr. Phillips was born March 17, 1914, in Frankford.
Mr. Phillips graduated from Westchester State Teachers College in 1942.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, who served in the South Pacific.
After the war, he was a teacher in Delaware and Maryland high schools.
Mr. Phillips was interested in history and designed the Constitutional Compass Rose, which was dedicated on Dec. 7, 1988, in front of Legislative Hall, Dover.
He umpired baseball and officiated at basketball games in Delaware, and was a lifetime member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.
While on summer break from teaching, Mr. Phillips worked at Kutscher"s Sports Academy in upstate New York.
He was one of the original members of St. Martin"s Episcopal Church, Selbyville.
Mr. Phillips was a lifetime member of the Mason-Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234.
He was an avid horticulturist, and while a member of the American Holly Society, discovered and registered several varieties of holly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Allie May Phillips; and an identical twin brother, Kermit, who died at age 12.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Jon T. Phillips; a daughter, Allison Agra and her husband, Eduardo; and grandchildren, Laura and Eric Agra.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark"s Episcopal Church, Millsboro.
