Walter Donald Johnson Sr., 90

DOVER - Walter Donald Johnson Sr. of Dover died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 90.

Mr. Johnson, prior to moving to Delaware in 1990, was a longtime resident of Kearny, N.J.

Born on Aug. 23, 1917, in Kearny, Mr. Johnson graduated from Kearny High School, attended the American Institute of Banking and entered the banking profession.

He retired from his 40-plus year career in banking as the assistant vice president of Valley National Bank.

Mr. Johnson was an active member and treasurer of Union Lodge 7, Dover, as well as a member Nuir Temple, Delaware, the Salam Temple in Livingston, N.J., and the Royal Order of Jesters of Delaware.

Mr. Johnson was also a member and officer in the Clifton (N.J.) Lions.

He attended and served as a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, located in Kearny.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth.

He survived by his sons, Walter "Don" Johnson Jr. and Glenn R. Johnson Sr.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be noon Wednesday in Restland Cemetery, East Hanover, N.J.

Instead of flowers, donations in memory of Walter should be sent to the Children"s Hospital in Philadelphia.
