Dover/Little Creek - Virginia Mary Johnston, "Ginny" entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018, at Kent General Hospital in Dover.
Ginny was born on July 22, 1963, in Hoboken, N.J. to Maureen Troy Firth and F. Richard Firth. She grew up in Strathmore, located in Matawan, N.J. She attended St. Benedict Catholic Church and School. Ginny was a member of the graduating class of 1981 at St. John Vianney High School. Both of these schools are in Holmdel, N.J. St. John Vianney is where she met her husband Tom Johnston.
Ginny graduated from Taylor Business Institute in 1982 as a travel agent. She worked as a reservations manager for TFI Tours International LTD in New York City. Ginny changed her career to preschool childcare at Good Shepherd Children's Center in Old Bridge, N.J. She developed her love for childcare at this job that lasted from 1986 to 2002.
Ginny and Tom moved to Dover in 2002. Ginny enjoyed her time as a preschool teacher at St. John's Lutheran Day Care in Dover teaching three and four-year-olds until 2015.
Ginny truly loved her last position at Tender Loving Care - Child Care & Learning Center in Middletown. She had a gift and such a special magic with children. Ginny loved to read, color, play and interact with them. She was a loving influence on a great many children over her 32-year career. Ginny was also very clever and imaginative at giving each of her charges a special nickname. Her kids truly loved Miss Ginny.
Ginny was a voracious reader and loved word games. She was a devoted Met's fan since childhood. During their married life, Ginny and Tom had four feline companions. Ginny treasured her many friends and will be remembered for her joyful and loving personality. She enjoyed the Delaware seashore, but in her heart, she was always a Jersey Girl. She will be sorely missed.
Ginny is survived by her parents, Richard and Maureen Firth of Sarasota, Fla.; her loving husband of 33 years, Thomas W. Johnston of Dover; her sister, Barbara Lines of Tomball, Texas; her brother, Paul Firth of Morganville, N.J.; and the Johnston family. She was "Aunt Ginny" to nine nieces, one nephew, and a grandniece all of whom she adored.
Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Church, Holmdel, N.J.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to: Little Creek Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., P.O. Box 327, 311 Main Street, Little Creek, DE 19961
