DOVER - Stuart Morgan Knapp passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Wilmington Hospital, Accent Care Hospice Unit.
Dr. Knapp was born July 9, 1942 in Washington, D.C. to the late Charlotte Herz Knapp and Dr. Stuart John Knapp.
He received three Master's degrees in Education-related areas from several colleges and a Ph.D. in Education Administration and Policy Studies from the State University of New York at Albany. He taught for 16 years as an elementary education classroom teacher in Syracuse, New York and then as a special education director in Vermont, and as a principal in New York. Following his employment in public school settings, he taught at the college level for the remainder of his career. Dr. Knapp taught at Lindsay Wilson College in Kentucky and then developed the Education Masters Degree program at Nyack College in New York. His last position was as Chairperson of the Education Department at Wesley College in Dover.
Dr. Knapp was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dover and was very active in civic organizations. He was a long-standing member of the Union Lodge #7 and served as Potentate of Nur Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Delaware Choral Society for many years and co-founded the Delaware Youth Chorale. He was also a member and served as president of Kiwanis Club of Dover, and a member of the German-American Club.
He loved music and was a member of many different church choirs, which is where he and his wife Caroline met. Together, they have been members of the Guild of the Metropolitan Opera on a long-standing basis. He enjoyed fishing, watching classic movies, and traveling with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of more than 37 years, Caroline "Carrie" Overton Knapp of Dover; daughters, Bethany Arsenault of Dover, Natalia Veen of Boulder, CO, and Heather Knapp of Wappinger Falls, NY; brother, Dr. Craig W. Knapp and his wife Tina of Rutland, Vermont; and grandchildren, Reagan Arsenault and Gabriel Quinones.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM, December 18, 2023 at the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 South State Street, Dover.
