Robert Henry Wechtenhiser

Wechtenhiser, 87 DOVER - Robert Henry "Bob" Wechtenhiser died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. A true Delaware native, Bob was born Oct. 4, 1925 in Harrington to William Griffith and Irene Reynolds Wechtenhiser. He grew up in Harrington, was an alumnus of Harrington High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in October 1943 as a pilot. After discharge from the service in 1946 Bob went to work for the Diamond State Telephone Company. Upon completing engineering courses at New York University, he became a trouble-shooter for the phone company and was head of PBX and Data Processing for Kent and Sussex Counties when he retired after 35 years. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and for several years, he did volunteer work with the telephone retirees building ramps for the handicapped. Bob was a fourteen year member of the Memorial Fire Company of Slaughter Beach, serving on the ambulance squad. He was a scoutmaster and mentor to many boys in Harrington and later led an Explorer Troop on many an adventure. Bob was a kind and gentle person and a friend to everyone he met. He was an avid reader, loved planes, and was always ready to head to the beach to fish. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William in 2006; and a sister, Doris in 1924. He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 33 years, Dottie; children, Cheryl Lahman (Leroy) of Harrington, Regina Lobacarro (Frank) of Millsboro, Robert Wechtenhiser (Judy) of Milford, Rebecca Craft (Tom) of Milford, and William Wechtenhiser (Lisa) of Stevensville, Md.; grandchildren, Shane, Cody, Payton, Ashley, Bryn, Nicholas and Justin; an adopted granddaughter, MeMe; two great-granddaughters; as well as hosts of faithful friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 at the McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce Street, Harrington where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
