DOVER - Reverend James V. Pettit passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Kent General Hospital Dover.
He was the son of the late Charles and Carrie Pettit.
Rev. Pettit was married to the love of his life, Irene for 70 years. They were married at the age of 18 just prior to Rev. Pettit joining the United States Air Force. They had five children all born in a different state.
Rev. Pettit proudly served in the USAF for 21 years as a Firefighter and as the Fire Chief at Dover AFB for an additional 13 years. He served as a Pastor both fulltime and part-time for over 17 years. He loved baseball, gardening and watching Westerns. He taught his children through the life that he lived, about Jesus and salvation. He had a strong work ethic and believed in being responsible; values he instilled in his children. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was the former Pastor for and current member of Sandtown Church of the Nazarene.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy P. Pettit; and is survived by his wife, Irene Pettit of Hartly, Del.; brother, Charles Pettit Jr. of Valrico, Fla.; daughters, Bonnie Graves of Hartly, Del., Robin Jurgens of Hartly, Del.; and sons, James Pettit of Macott, Fla. and Mark Pettit of Newton, N.C. He is also survived by his 21 grandchildren.
Receiving will be held at The Cross Church of the Nazarene, 1818 North Little Creek Rd., Dover, DE 19901 at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, December 12, 2021 with service to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the same location. Burial will be Monday Dec. 13, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the Delaware veterans Memorial Cemetery Millsboro, Del.
