GEORGETOWN - Melvin Donald Barrett of Georgetown died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in the Milford Center. He was 74.
Mr. Barrett was born in Wilmington, son of the late Melvin and Mary (Evans) Barrett.
He was a 1973 graduate of Tennessee Temple University, Chattanooga.
He worked for the state of Delaware, State Service Center, Georgetown. He retired in 1995 as a coordinator after 20 years of service. He taught classes for the Delaware Safety Council. He left as Brookside chief of police in the late 1980s.
Mr. Barrett enjoyed camping, traveling, especially to different NASCAR tracks, genealogy and Civil War history. He loved Siamese cats.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Debbie Barrett; six children and their spouses, Jill and Mike Kenney of Salisbury, Md., Jodie and Charles Galate of Atlanta, Jason and Wanda Barrett of Fort Benning, Ga., Susan and Todd Mitchell of Milton, Laurie and Gene Handlin of Ocean View and Jordan Barrett of Reston, Va.; a brother, Charles Barrett of Lewes; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Saturday in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Georgetown Regional Office, P.O. Box 625, Georgetown, DE 19947.
