Hostvedt MILLSBORO - Born Feb. 9th, 1927 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Mary left this life on the 10th of November. She was the second of four children born to Jesse and Marie Kline. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Harry Leif Hostvedt; her parents; her brothers Kenneth and Elwood; and her little sister, Ruth. Mary grew up in a converted school house on West Steels Corners Road and attended Northampton schools. Leaving high school before graduation, she cared for her young sister and cooked and cleaned for the family, while both parents and her grandmother, Marie Lappin, worked in Akron. She was an active member of the Northampton Grange and sang in the choir of Northampton United Methodist Church. She met her husband when he came home with her brother Kenny on an Army pass near the end of World War II. They married in October of 1949. As a young couple, they moved to Philadelphia, where their first son was born. They then relocated to Dawson Manor in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where Mary and Harry made lifelong friends and raised their three sons, Donald (Lindeve), Rickie (Joann), and Douglas (Julie). Mary had love and loyalty for her family and then some. Although she faithfully followed her husband to residences in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware, she always considered home to be Ohio. "Going home" meant seeing family and friends in the place where she grew up. Her nurturing nature led Mary to seek positions taking care of the young children of working parents and she stayed in touch with some of those children long after they were grown. She also enjoyed her jobs serving patrons at McDonald's in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, the Willow Grove (PA) Naval Air Base, and the United Technologies cafeteria in Farmington, Connecticut. Mary and Harry retired to the quiet community of Millsboro, Delaware, near Rehoboth Beach. Mary was famous for delicious baked goods, including Jewish Apple Cake and Nut Bread, and homespun sayings. After she lost her husband in 2007, Mary returned to Hatboro, the town where she and Harry had raised their family, and resided at the Wesley Enhanced Living center, living a quiet life near two of her sons. Mary was a breast cancer survivor. She leaves behind seven grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews, and an untold number of children she cared for over the years. A funeral service will be held at her home church, Northampton United Methodist, 852 West Bath Road, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday the 19th of November, with interment at Northampton Cemetery immediately thereafter. A reception for family and friends will be held at the church following the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Northampton United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
