LONG NECK - Mary H. Shockley, daughter of the late Elzie and Melinda Watson, was born Aug. 6, 1920, in Slaughter Neck. Her demise came at 5 p.m., on Jan. 13, 2012, at Bayhealth Medical Center, Milford, after a lengthy illness surrounded by her loving family. She was born, raised, and received her education in Slaughter Neck. She married the late Herschel Shockley, and from this union came one daughter, Grace Ann Young. She received Christ at an early age and continued to work for Christ until she passed. Mary, also known to many as Mom-Mom Hess, loved to quote the Bible. Her favorite scripture, which ended every prayer was Psalm 23. She was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served as an Usher, President of Women's Society, now known as United Methodist Women, Past President of Communion Steward, Sunday school teacher, a member of the senior choir, arranged flowers for the church, head of kitchen committee, and a member of the Evangelism Committee. Her civic activities in the community were: a member of the community Action, past President of Ways and Means Committee, served on the National Council of Negro Women, and a member of the NAACP Milford/Slaughter Neck Branch. She worked many years as a domestic engineer until she retired. She loved to cook and was always willing to take care of family and friends. Her home as well as her heart, was always open and ready to welcome. She was the matriarch of the family. She was preceded In death by three sisters, Virginia Watson, Clara-Doris Lassiter, and Alpenia Morris; four brothers, Rexsall, Weldon, Joseph, and Charles Watson. She leaves to cherish her everlasting memories to her daughters, Grace A. Young (Maurice) and Patricia D. Miller; one sister, Blanche Crim (Larence); one sister-in-law, Argatha Riddick; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, Cassandra Young-Lavonne, "Punkin", Akira Slaton, Arlana Harriford (William), Quinn Gant, Stephanie Miller-Adams (Gregory Sr.), Stefo'n Miller, Nevaeh, Gregory Jr., Knolyn, Krista Miller-Erykah, Walter Smith Jr., Michiah, Kristoffer, and Mary Parker (Roy) Troy Matthews (Vicky); three great-great-grandchildren; one Godson, Frederick Dufy; a God daughter; a host of nephews, nieces cousins; her extended families, Wilkins, Sentman, Clendaniels, Ehrlich, and many friends, adopted son, James Starling (Jeanel), God-sons, Hilbert Watson and Hidrom D. Fisher Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. Services will be noon, Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, with a viewing one hour and 45 minutes prior.
