SLAUGHTER NECK - Mary Ellen Davis, of Slaughter Neck, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at home. She was 72.
Mary was born April 10, 1935, to the late Jacob Davis and Margaret Ingram.
She was educated at William C. Jason in Georgetown, and Apex Beauty School in Philadelphia.
Mary worked in a beauty shop in Lewes for several years.
She worked at Allen Family Food in Harbeson for over 20 years until she retired.
Mary became a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Slaughter Neck, under the leadership of the Rev. J.O. Lockman. She was a very faithful member until her illness. She served as an usher on the usher board. She was a member of the gospel choir, United Methodist Women, family ministries and she was a Sunday school teacher. Mary was the chairperson of the pastor's parish relations, greeters and the youth department.
Mary's favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalms and her favorite song was "The Battle is Not Yours, It's the Lords."
She was a very quiet, kind, humble and loving person. She loved her family and was very instrumental in preparing for family gatherings.
She also loved gospel music and loved to sing.
Mary was a person one could go to for help and was always willing to help.
She loved to travel. Her son Darrin would say, "She's on every boat that sails."
Mary was a great cook and baker. She made the best rice pudding and pies.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Norman Davis.
She is survived by three children, Michael Davis, Sheila Riley and Darrin Davis; six grandchildren, Lakesha Davis, Michael Cannon, Dale Davis, Carmen Arroyo who was an adopted granddaughter, Souljah Riley and Shalonda Doyle; a godson, Reginald Slayton; a son-in-law, Kervy Riley; a granddaughter-in-law, Dashina Cannon; six great-grandchildren, Jabri, Makayla, Jykiim, Dania, Caydeb and Kevin; three brothers, Gilbert, John and Circus; four sisters, Elsie Carroll, Winifred Slayton, Mildred Rodriquez and Lillian Davis; two brothers-in-law, Jose Rodriquez and Lawrence Young; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Davis and Marie Davis; a dear friend, Thorris Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Slaughter Neck.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, with a viewing two hours prior, at the church.
Interment will be in the Old Hickory Cemetery, Slaughter Neck.
