Mary Mills Bare, 94

WILMINGTON - Mary Mills Bare of Wilmington died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, in Forwood Manor Health Care Center, Wilmington. She was 94.

Mrs. Bare was born March 9, 1912, daughter of the late Miles Jennings and Melinda Welch Emory Mills. She was the youngest of nine children and grew up on a farm in Cedar Neck, near Milford.

She graduated from the Wilmington General School of Nursing in 1933.

Mrs. Bare was a private duty nurse and manager of the dental office of Dr. J. Paul Winthrop.

She had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington since 1931. She was active with United Methodist Women, the church nursery, Charis Crafts and headed the church kitchen committee for many years.

In the late 1950s, Mrs. Bare implemented Dr. William F. Dunkle's vision of weekly social activities for senior citizens at Grace Church, a concept that later developed into the Wilmington Senior Center. Mrs. Bare was also a benefactor of the choir and the musical program at the church.

She was a member of Delaware Chapter C of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Crest Century Club of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the DuPont Country Club.

Mrs. Bare lived in Normandy Manor from 1950 to 1981, and at Foulk Manor North from 1983 to 2005.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Paul O. Bare, in 1981.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Mallonee of Wilmington; a son, John P. Bare of Hockessin and his companion, Kim Townsend; a granddaughter, Marianne Mallonee of Boulder, Colo.; a grandson, John E. Mallonee of Bethesda, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, in Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Burial will be private.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Grace United Methodist Church, 900 Washington St., Wilmington, DE 19801; or The P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312.
