DOVER - Martha L. Nickerson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Her body was laid to rest in a private service with family only on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Martha was born on April 5, 1944 in Dover, to the late Thomas W. Nickerson, Sr. and Kathryn M. Nickerson. Martha was retired from the Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, and worked for years for her friends Mark and Ruby Schaeffer in their real estate business. She also helped with the books for her niece's bakery. She was an active, life-long member of the Cheswold United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women where she held several offices, most recently Treasurer. She was also a member of 4-H for years and through adulthood was a member of the LINKS. Martha was a quiet soul, humble and modest. She was always around when anyone needed something. She was a staple at the Cheswold Church Suppers, making "pickle" for the church to sell, and after years of practice, nailed the secret chicken and dumplings recipe that her mother passed down. She canned the best pickled beets in town, again a secret recipe. Although she never married, she cared for her family always. She is the youngest of four children and the only girl. She took such good care of her mother and father and all of her brothers her entire life. She also helped to raise three more generations of Nickerson children. Her name has changed through the years, from Martha, to Snookie, to NuNu, but the love she had for each generation will never change. She was so thoughtful. She never forgot a birthday and always had iced tea and a snack if you stopped by for a visit. Martha will be remembered for her willingness to help others, her strong faith in God and her deep love and commitment to her family and close friends. Martha is survived by three brothers, Thomas W. Nickerson, Jr. and his wife Mickey; Samuel L. Nickerson and his wife Sandy; Paul I. Nickerson and his best friend Val. She leaves the legacy of Thomas W. Nickerson, III and his wife Maggie; Dawne Nickerson-Banez and her husband Tom; Wendy L. Bonney and her husband Paul; and Tracey L. Grossman and her husband Mike. Martha enjoyed her grand-nieces and nephews Thomas W. Nickerson, IV; Logan R. Nickerson, Cameron, Hannah, Rachel and Jack Bonney; and Nicholas, Joshua and Steven Grossman, but we all know the apple of her eye was, Thomas W. Nickerson, V, "Wyatt", her great-great nephew whom she spent a lot of time with. A celebration of life will be held at the Cheswold United Methodist Church, 97 Main Street in Cheswold, on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. where friends are invited to join in the celebration. A luncheon will follow hosted by the United Methodist Women. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
