WORTON, Md. - Macduff Symington, of Worton, died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Easton Memorial Hospital. He was 80.

Born Dec. 1, 1927, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Frank Fife Symington and Grace Cover Symington.

He was a senior business development officer and vice president of marketing sales for Philadelphia National Bank/CoreStates Bank.

Mac was formerly married to Ruth Warren Symington. After his first marriage ended, he then went on to marry Joyce McCook Symington on Oct. 15, 1988.

He attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he graduated in 1944.

He attended Yale University in New Haven, Conn., where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1949.

Mac was very active on campus. He was a member of the Fence Club and Glee Club and participated in many sports, including tennis, squash, lacrosse, and was captain of the soccer team.

He joined a senior society called Wolf's Head, which he was closely associated all his life.

As a senior at Yale, Mac was awarded The Silliman College Cup for all-around support of his college.

In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a private. He spent his last four years of service in the Office of Special Investigations, where he served as assistant chief and then chief of counter-intelligence.

He was a captain when he left the Air Force in 1955 to re-enter civilian life.

Mac was an original organizer and 27-year board member of the U.S. Pro Indoor Tennis Tournament, Philadelphia, and represented Philadelphia National Bank as a major sponsor of the tournament.

Mac also helped to launch and was the first president of the Arthur Ashe Youth and Tennis Education Center in the early 1980s, and he remained active on the board until early 2000.

He helped to successfully market the National Constitution Center on Independence Square, Philadelphia, which opened July 4, 2004.

He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Joyce McCook Symington of Worton; three daughters, Jean Symington Craig of Fairfield, Iowa, Grace Bailey Symington of Atlanta, and Louise Macduff Symington of Phoenixville, Pa.; a son, Frank Symington of Dubois, Wyo.; two sisters, Emily Filer of Norfolk, Va., and Gracie Rienhoff of Worton; and two grandchildren, Piper Symington and Blair Symington, both of Twin Falls, Idaho.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Daniel L. Gross officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 N. Cross St., Chestertown, MD 21620; or Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center, 4842 Ridge Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19129.
