Lorna E. Mitten, 89
DOVER - Lorna E. Mitten passed away at home surrounded by her family Tuesday, December 29, 2020.
Lorna was born to the late Christian Edwardson and Grace Hoffmeyer Edwardson. She grew up in Dover and graduated from Dover High School. She won the Miss Delaware pageant in 1950 with her operatic soprano voice. She spoke fondly of her experience participating in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. She married Mathew Mitten, also of Dover, and retired from her vocal career to raise their four children. She later ran several businesses including a cosmetics company, a construction company, and a horse farm, and worked in management at a real estate company, before working as the office manager for her son's Mid Atlantic Dismantlement Corp. For over 30 years, she was a member of Soroptimist International of Dover, serving in various offices. Throughout her lifetime, Lorna enjoyed working with horses, going to the beach, and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mathew E. Mitten.
She is survived by her children, Yvonne Mitten (Rick Mazol), Denise Mitten, Mathew Mitten (Suzanne), and Holly Mitten (Cindy Harrington); and grandchild, Lauren Mitten; as well as step-grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends and relatives.
Mom will be interred Friday, July 16, 2021, at noon, at Barrett's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. Friends and family are welcome.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to SPCA Camden, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or Alzheimer's organizations in honor of her siblings.
Letters of condolence may be sent and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
