DOVER - Larry W. Thompson Sr. passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. The son of the late Marie and Raymond Thompson, Larry was born in Dover and graduated from Middletown High School. After his high school graduation, he enlisted and served in the United States Marine Corps. He devoted over 50 years to the construction industry, working at Eastburn, Thompson excavating, Greggo & Ferrara, Hodgson Vocational and Diamond Materials. He most recently created a core curriculum for Diamond Materials that included both classroom instruction and hands on instruction out in the field.
Larry became certified in CPR to give back to the community. He has trained over 2,000 people to perform CPR. He was also 100 % dedicated to his teaching and his students and was a lifetime member of Middletown Volunteer Hose Company, The American Legion and the VFW. Larry has received the Lifetime Achievement award from the Delaware Contractor's Association. Larry had a love for coaching and volunteered countless hours, which included coaching teams for each of his children. When Larry was not working, he enjoyed collecting antiques and playing the lottery.
Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Kay M. Thompson; his brother, Sonny Thompson; and his sister, Jeanette Nichol.
He is survived by his children, Carolyn M. Jones (Cliff) of Virginia, Kelly K. Thompson of Felton, Larry W. Thompson Jr. (Erin) of Dover, Kevin N. Thompson (Lauren) of Camden, and his seven grandchildren, Kayla, Kristopher, Karly, Dylan, Jordan, Chase, and Kara who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by his wife of the last 11 years, Sheila Thompson.
Funeral Services will be held at Faries Funeral Home at 29 S. Main Street, Smyrna, DE 19977 on Jan. 25, 2019 to begin visitation at 4 p.m. and memorial to follow at 5 p.m. Reception will follow at the Smyrna Fire House at 103 West Commerce Street, Smyrna, DE 19977 and all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association in Larry's name.
