Joyce Elizabeth
Emory Kucek, 92
Joyce E. Kucek died peacefully in her sleep at home on Wednesday morning, August 4, 2021.
She was born on June 22, 1929, in Dover, Del., and had also lived briefly with her family in El Paso, Texas and Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1963-65.
Mrs. Kucek was preceded in death by her father, Reynolds Emory, in 1945, and her mother, Elizabeth Ellis Emory, in 2000. She married Emil Kucek in 1948, and he preceded her in death in 1987.
A 1947 graduate of Dover High School, Joyce was employed as a secretary in the Capital School District for 31 years, including 26 years as the secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. Prior to that, she was employed as a secretary at Coty Beauty Co. in Dover.
Joyce looked forward to the fun-filled, two-week family vacation in Rehoboth, Del. with her mother, children & spouses, and grandchildren. The annual tradition continued for 21 years and always included beach time, evening strolls on the boardwalk, sitting on the benches gazing at the ocean, and dinners at Jake's Seafood Restaurant. Dolle's caramel popcorn was always her favorite treat.
Joyce loved dinners and celebrations with family and friends, reading, and watching her favorite TV shows (anything with Tom Selleck). In retirement, Joyce also enjoyed her house and gardening, monthly breakfasts with friends from the Capital School District Retired Secretaries Association, and many short and long excursions with another group of retired school district friends.
Joyce was a member of the Auxiliary of Stockley Center, The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post #9962, where she served as a president and longtime treasurer, the Arc of Delaware, and St. John's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her four children, Susan Sloan (Alpheus) of Felton, Quie Linda Kucek of Virginia, Marc Kucek (Patricia) of Felton, and Kathy Kucek of Dover. She is further survived by three grandchildren, Jeffrey Sloan of Wisconsin, Virginia Kucek (Cindy Russo) of Rehoboth, and Nicholas Kucek (Jessica) of Felton; and four great grandchildren, Avery and Noah Kucek of Felton, and Elise and Bennett Russo-Kucek of Rehoboth. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Emilie Schmick of Virginia; a nephew, a niece, and several cousins.

Our family thanks the wonderful caregivers from Americare Home Solutions who helped make it possible for us to honor Mom's wish to remain in her home of 71 years. We are also thankful for the compassionate care given by the nurses and aides from Delaware Hospice who also cared for her in her final months. She will be greatly missed.
