WYOMING - Jonny Joe Johnson passed away Monday, August 9, 2021, at Kent General Hospital.
Mr. Johnson was born February 20, 1956, in Tachikawa, Japan to the late Irvin Henry Johnson and Mikako Sato. He graduated from high school in Tokyo.
He served 21 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant. Mr. Johnson served several overseas tours, including deployments during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After retiring, he worked for several years with the test labs at ILC Dover, where he was a part of the team that implemented the ground-breaking airbag cushions for the Mars Pathfinder mission. He also worked for the Delaware River and Bay Authority on radio equipment statewide, retiring in 2015.
Jonny had a lifelong interest in astronomy and space, attending several rocket launches and closely following the latest NASA projects. He also worked with the Wyoming Town Council, the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge and volunteered for events like June Jam and other area festivals. He was always tinkering with the latest electronic equipment and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his daughters, Kirsten Shae Johnson and her husband, Petersen Curt, of Wynnewood, PA. and Erika Johnson of Wynnewood, PA.; sister, Diana Kajikawa of Tacoma, WA.; nephew, Hiroshi Kajikawa of Tacoma, WA.; grandchildren, Maxwell Curt and Amalia Curt.
A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2021, at Torbert Funeral Chapel-South, 1145 East Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover, DE. Visitation will be one hour prior. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
