DOVER - John J. Friedman died July 19, 2013 after an extended illness. He was born and grew up in N.Y., N.Y. He served in the U.S. Air Force 11 years, first in military police then as a loadmaster on the C-5. He had a BS in Accounting from Wilmington College. John served as the CEO of Phoenix Mental Health and then Phoenix Behavioral Health which was recently sold to Alpha Health Centers. John was very interested in the community and served on the Dover Planning Commission and was chairman for many years. He was involved in Rotary and in the Chamber of Commerce, winning Small Business Person of the year in 2005 while in partnership with Robert Gorkin MD. John served as president of Dover's 4th of July Committee, Chairman of the Community Partners of the Air Force Association, and was on the Board of Directors for the Dover Cultural Commission. He was an Honorary Commander at Dover Air Force Base, and Vice President of Economic Development for the Dover Chamber of Commerce. John was a member of Del Vets Post 2 and the Elks 1903, and an honorary member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He is predeceased by his mother, Stella Friedman; uncles, George and Tony Konjevoda; aunts, Kay Konjevoda and Dolly Casanover. Last week he lost his faithful dog, Max, who was constantly at his side. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Faye Bibee-Friedman; and son, Travis who was his caretaker during his long illness; his sister, Mary Friedman of New York; her three children, James, Cynthia and Phyllis Zanichkowski; a beloved aunt, Pat Konjevoda of Williamsport, Pa.; a special cousin, Jemela Omar and other Konjevoda cousins. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at Calvary Assembly of God, 1141 E. Lebanon Road (Rt 10), Dover In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary's Benevolence program, 1141 E. Lebanon Rd, Dover, DE 19901.
