John Finney Downham, 79 BRANDYWINE - John Finney Downham, of Brandywine Hundred, a retired senior vice president of Delaware Trust Company, died in Christiana Hospital Sunday, July 27, 2008. He was 79. Mr. Downham retired in 1990 as Investment Division Manager and Chairman of the Trust Investment Committee after 27 years with the bank's trust department. He was born in Northampton County, Va., grew up in Wyoming, and graduated from Caesar Rodney High School. He received a BA degree from the University of Delaware in 1951 and served as an artillery officer during the Korean War. Mr. Downham in 1953 was employed in the Textile Fibers Department sales office of the DuPont Company in Providence, R.I. He later joined Merrill Lynch & Company as an account executive, working in New York City and Allentown, Pa. He returned to Delaware in 1961 to accept an investment position with the Pension Fund Section of the DuPont Company, moving to Delaware Trust in 1964. Delaware Trust is now part of Wachovia Bank. Community interests over the years included Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Peninsula United Methodist Homes, University of Delaware Alumni Association, Council of Civic Organizations of Brandywine Hundred, Sons of the American Revolution and the University and Whist Club. Mr. Downham is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katharine Leggett Downham; two sons, John Finney Downham Jr. and wife Marguerite of Westmont, N.J., and Thomas West Downham and wife Donna of San Francisco, Calif.; two grandsons, David and Matthew. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. today in Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Fairfax. Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden.
