John C. Knight, 91

DOVER - John C. Knight of Dover passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, in Milford Center. He was 91.

He was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Wyoming, to the late John and Annie (Roper) Knight.

Mr. Knight was a member of Wyoming United Methodist Church, serving on all committees and as treasurer for many years.

Mr. Knight grew up in the Wyoming area, attending and graduating from Caesar Rodney High School. He was a Boy Scout and assistant scout master, and also played on the first Caesar Rodney football team.

After graduating from Caesar Rodney, Mr. Knight attended Beacom Business College, Wilmington.

Upon graduation with a degree in accounting, he worked for Pullman Co., Wilmington; Layton & Co., Dover; Layton & Layton, Georgetown; Emerson Fruit Brokers; Hoffecker's Automobile Agency; and Townsend Brothers. Mr. Knight was office manager with Dover Volkswagen until retiring from work in 1995.

He served his country in World War II in the 2nd Air Force 73rd Bomb Wing from March 1943 to November 1946 in the Pacific Campaign in Saipan.

Mr. Knight helped build the Camden-Wyoming Little League Ball Park and was a coach.

He joined the Dover Stamp Club in 1975, serving as secretary from February 1983 to April 1984, then became treasurer until October 1998. Mr. Knight joined the club with general interest. His main collections were Duck Stamps, United Nations, Commemorative Collection, Philatelic Fulfillment and U.S. new and used stamps. Mr. Knight's uncle started him collecting stamps when he was a boy.

He helped sell first-day covers during anniversary celebrations, Armed Forces Day and on many others occasions.

He was an avid reader and gardener.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hazel Knight; and a brother, William Knight.

Mr. Knight is survived by a son and his wife, Fred and Nancy Knight of Camden; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Paul Brooks of Camden; a sister-in-law and her husband, Janet and Bob Kriss of Dover; a sister-in-law and her husband, Ann and Norman Tush of Smyrna; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kelly and Lance Chandler; four grandsons and three granddaughters-in-law, Matt and Cary Knight, Jason Knight, Paul and Jennifer Brooks and John and Bridget Brooks; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Remembrance services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call one hour prior.

Burial will be at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Wyoming United Methodist Church, 112 Broad St., Camden-Wyoming, DE 19934.
