NEW CASTLE - Joan H. Campbell, 74, of New Castle, died Aug. 2, 2011, in Christiana Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Campbell was born on Nov. 2, 1936, daughter of the late Walter and Agnes Newnam Hadley. She was raised in Galena, and after her marriage in 1957 she moved to New Castle. Joan was a graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing and received her Bachelor of Arts from Wilmington College. Her career as a register nurse began at St. Francis Hospital and continued at Christiana Care, retiring in 2005 after 44 years of service. Joan was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and the Wilmington Manor VFC Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, casinos and was an avid reader. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by two children, John R. Campbell, III and Mary Patricia Campbell; a sister, Agnes A. Blakslee; and a granddaughter, Danielle D'Ortona. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Roeder Campbell, Jr.; two daughters, Karen D'Ortona and Robin Cunningham both of Wilmington; her twin sister, Jean Mc Cain of Newtown Square, Pa.; and sister, Connie Green of New Castle; four grandchildren, John R. Campbell, IV, Ashley Williams, Kristen and Nicole Cunningham; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial in Galena Cemetery. www.galenafuneralhomeofsls.com
