James Thorn, 74 HANOVER, Md. - Retired Sergeant Major James Thorn, of Hanover, died suddenly on July 8, 2008 at his home. He was 74. He was born on March 28, 1934, in Milford, Del., to the late George and Minnie Thorn. He was one of the founding members of the Fort Meade E-9 Association, a member of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Calvary Association Buffalo Soldiers (The Official Army Unit Association) of Baltimore, and a member of the Fort Meade Senior Bowling League. James enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, traveling and was an avid builder. He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers! He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Shirley L. Thorn. James is survived by his one daughter, Karen M. Thorn of Hanover; four sons, Anthony, Gordon and Maurice of Severn, and Randall of Harlem, Ga.; and two daughters-in-law, Marilyn of Harlem, and Lisa of Windsor Mill; five grandchildren, Tanisha of Athens, Ga., Antoine of Okinawa, Japan, Jade Clash of Windsor Mill, Christian of Harlem, and Geremy of Severn. The family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover. The family will also receive visitors in Maryland from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday in the Argonne Hills Chapel Center, Rockenbach and Grandea Ave., Fort Meade. Funeral services will be Wednesday immediately following the viewing at the Argonne Hills Chapel Center beginning at noon. Internment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. on Sept. 11.
