Jacob F. 'Jake' Urban, 73

NEW CASTLE - Jacob F. "Jake" Urban of New Castle died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, in his home. He was 73.

Mr. Urban was born Oct. 13, 1933, in Philadelphia, son of the late Jacob M. and Esther A. (Morgan) Urban.

He served his country for two years as a boat captain in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Urban worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a fireman. He later accepted a position with the U.S. Postal Service, where he was employed for 28 years until he retired as a postal supervisor.

Active in his community, he was a life-member of the Minquadale Volunteer Fire Co. He also served as scout master of Boy Scout Troop 34 in Manor Park for many years.

In his leisure time, he greatly enjoyed dancing, gardening, solving puzzles, golfing, fishing and assisting the Minquadale Ladies Auxiliary with their many fund-raisers and banquets.

Mr. Urban especially looked forward to taking trips with his wife and spending time with his beloved family.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jimmy Anker, Leland Anker and Richard Urban.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Kathleen C. (Harris) Urban; six children, Michael E. Urban and his wife, Cynthia, of West Chester, Pa., Kenneth S. Urban and his wife, Nancy, of Chestertown, Md., Kathleen M. Urban and her partner, Kelly Dawson, of Boca Raton, Fla., Lisa A. Urban and her partner, Denise Beddow, of Hampstead, N.C., Jacob F. Urban of Pedricktown, N.J., and his fiancee, Michele Lehman, and Phillip Urban of New Castle and his fiancee, Patricia Gordon; a brother and a sister-in-law, John and Mary Anker; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Sanford and Bonnie and Russell Cunningham; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, in Spicer-Mullikan Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle.

Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720; or to Minquadale Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 663, Manor Branch, New Castle, DE 19720.
