J. Roland Lucas, 93

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - J. Roland Lucas of Chestertown died Saturday, June 9, 2007, in Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown. He was 93.

Mr. Lucas was born Jan. 20, 1914, in Wye Mills, son of the late Bradford and Vallie (Chance) Lucas.

He attended school in Church Hill.

Mr. Lucas and his second wife lived in Chestertown. He worked with Church Hill Lumber Co. for many years. He later worked as a self-employed painting contractor until his retirement in 2001.

He was a true gentleman, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Lucas was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Chestertown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Margaret Stant, who was from Church Hill, whom he had married in 1938; and his second wife, the former Gladys Lane, whom he married in 1961, Oct. 29, 2006; and a stepson, Richard "Shady" Lane, Feb. 21, 2007.

He is survived by a daughter, Margaret Le Grand of Ashburn, Va.; two stepsons, Buddy Lane of Chestertown and Stephen Lane of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, Calvin Lucas of Chestertown; a sister, Ethel Lucas Everett of Chestertown; four grandchildren, Jennifer Crawford, Janette Worley, Drew Lane and Erek Lane; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Church Hill Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Kent and Queen Anne"s Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 126, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral home, Chestertown.
