Dover - Irene A. (nee Stieber) McGregor passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014 at home surrounded by her family. She was born April 29, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA, the only daughter of the late William and Amelia Stieber. Irene graduated from Masbaum Vocational School in Philadelphia. Irene worked as a bookkeeper at Exide Battery in her younger years and also did secretarial work. She was a member of Penn Treaty Cadets Drum & Bugle Corp in Philadelphia until she married John McGregor in 1943. She was a dedicated military wife and mother, expertly moving her family numerous times across the country and oceans while her husband served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (and later in the U.S. Air Force). The family settled in Dover in 1962 and Irene became very active in the Catholic Chapel at Dover Air Force Base where she was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sodality, holding various offices throughout the years. Irene assisted the chaplains and volunteered her time at the chapel helping when and where necessary. During Operation Desert Storm, Irene made the yellow ribbons that hung on the fences around Dover Air Force Base. Her hobbies included baking, making crafts and sewing which brought her great joy. She left many with tangible memories through her crafts and sewing projects. Irene was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as a friend. She was filled with love and compassion for all and will be greatly missed. Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband, John; two sons, John Jr. and Patrick as well as her three brothers, William, Robert and Norman. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael P. and his wife, JoAnn of Camden; three daughters, Eileen J. Doordan of Selbyville, Maureen A. Rocheleau and husband, Ronald of Gloucester, VA and Kim M. Endres and husband John of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Valerie Plessinger of Westerville, Ohio, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two nephews and a niece as well as numerous cousins and friends. Friends and family may call Friday April 4, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday April 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 522 Main St., Marydel, DE. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901, or to Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation, 248 E Chestnut St, Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713.
