Helen 'Merita' McClain, 94 TOWNSEND - Helen "Merita" McClain, of Townsend, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, in Pinnacle Health Center, Smyrna. She was 94. Mrs. McClain was born Dec. 16, 1913, near Smyrna, the daughter of the late Walker and Golda Wrench Warner. Mrs. McClain was a graduate of Smyrna High School and a member of Friendship United Methodist Church. She served as treasurer for the former Women's Society for Christian Service, for over 40 years. She was a loving mother and homemaker. She loved life and so enjoyed her flowers and canning the fruits and vegetables from her garden. She will be greatly missed by those whose hearts she touched. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. McClain; and a daughter, Jean McClain Dale. Mrs. McClain is survived by two sons, James W. and Samuel L. McClain, both of Smyrna; three daughters, Virginia M. Guessford of Odessa, Joan M. Swackhammer, and Doris (Dottie) Chambers, both of Smyrna; a sister, Estelle Keiser; a brother, Robert D. Warner, both of Seaford; a devoted granddaughter, Sheri Swackhammer; 11 additional grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Services will be noon Saturday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, in care of Pauline Shockley, 986 Taylor's Bridge Road, Townsend, DE 19734; or the Sisters of Charity, 23 Carlisle Drive, Dover, DE 19904.
