Harold G. Young, Jr., 73
HARTLY, Del. - Harold G. Young, Jr. passed away surrounded by his devoted family and friends on Sunday, June 5, 2022.
Mr. Young was born on March 18, 1949, in Easton, Md., the son of the late Ruth Ellen and Harold G. Young, Sr.
Mr. Young grew up on Tilghman Island, Md. just down the banks of Black Walnut Cove from his grandparents, the late Gorman and Addie Cummings. After moving to Smyrna, Del. as a teen, Mr. Young would spend as much time as he could down home on Tilghman, working on the dredge boat with his grandfather and soft crabbing in his little wooden skiff in the shallows of Black Walnut Cove.
Harold graduated from John Bassett Moore (Smyrna) High School in 1967, where he played football, wrestled, and competed in track and field.
In 1968, Harold enlisted in the United States Navy. After basic training, he volunteered for Navy Amphibious Operations. He completed a tour of duty on a Patrol Boat-River in Vietnam.
Harold was a true outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and cutting firewood. His love for the great outdoors ran through all his interests; his favorite book was Big Red and his favorite movie was Jeremiah Johnson. Harold was known for his sharp sense of humor and enjoyed trading barbs with anyone who could keep up with him. He loved Christmas, and big Sunday dinners.
Mr. Young retired from Tidewater Utilities in 2014 as a facilities superintendent.
In addition to his parents and grandparents; he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Nancy V. Young; and brother, Roger Young.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Sydney Young Riggi and her husband Tony of Hartly, Del.; brother, W. Marc Young and his wife Jackie, of Smyrna, Del.; brother, Kurt Young of Townsend, Del.; and sister, Carol Ann Bramble of Greensboro, Md. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Bonnie L. Vodvarka of Newark, Del., Joanna E. Vodvarka, and her husband Gene McLaughlin of Wilmington, Del. and Gail V. Brynes, and her husband Joe of New Castle, Del.; and nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Memorial services will begin at 12 p.m. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that you donate to the Disabled American Veterans, Tilghman Waterman's Museum, Friends of St. Johns Chapel on Tilghman Island, or a charity of your choice.
