Gladys "Toots" Groff

Posted

Gladys “Toots” Groff passed peacefully at Delaware Hospice on February 1, 2025.
She was born April 18, 1930 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to the late Margorie and Harry Chalfant.
She lived for many years in Milford, DE with her husband John “Rebel”  Groff. After Rebel passed, she moved to Greenwood and was very happy. During her life she made many friends and went on lots of adventures. She was known to jump in her car at a moment's notice to visit family in Pennsylvania, ponies in Chincoteague, thrift stores, yard sales and even Florida to see her sister. On long trips she would use a tape recorder to recount her travels to loved ones.
Gladys enjoyed sewing, tea parties and writing letters. She shared these passions with everyone especially her “grandchildren” Christie and Claudia. Gladys attended and photographed every first day of school from kindergarten to high school with the girls. Sending and receiving cards and letters was a source of enjoyment for Gladys and was shared by her “girls”. She made cakes for weddings, birthdays and more. She enjoyed having company and showing off her “Victorian room” and collection of tea pots. She liked to build things to fit her house. When she could no longer swing a hammer, another friend helped her design and order whatever cabinet or structure she wanted.
Be it banana splits with one friend or scones with another, Gladys loved to entertain. Her coffee pot was always ready, and she enjoyed stimulating conversation. She liked hot dogs, Asti spumante and waffles. She LOVED her two friends who would cook scrapple special just for her. Once she could no longer travel, Gladys spent time reading, chatting and caring for her cats. Over the years Gladys loved and cared for many dogs and cats. Each of them was special to her and she could tell you many stories about them.
Her friends were many and varied. Be it someone to plow her driveway, clean the house or cut her hair, Gladys knew everyone. She made friends easily and was well liked. She was a strong personality and will be remembered well. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.
