Gladys Thornton MILLSBORO - Gladys Thornton, born May 12, 1928, in Chester, Pa., gave up her physical body so she could go in Spirit to be with the Lord on June 7, 2010. No one deserved to be in God's restful arms more then Gladys, a kind and gentle spirit who spent her life in service to God. Gladys was well known in the surrounding community for her devotion to serving others. Gladys volunteered many years for the Stockley center bringing patients home to visit with the family. Her and John also raised at least ten foster children and cared for both of their fathers until they passed. All through her life she taught Sunday school and VBS class as well as a Ladies Bible study. In addition, Gladys spent many years making wedding and birthday cake and baked Christmas and party baked goods. She also hosted very entertaining luncheons always surprising the attendees. She taught classes in high school and adult education providing both spiritual and instructional education. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband John in 2001; and two sons, Michael and Timothy; a brother, Wallace Journey; and a sister, Doris Lawson. She is survived by a daughter, Janice Mitchell; three sons, John Thornton and the two preachers David and Stephen; and a sister, Frances Jensen. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. All of whom love her dearly. Gladys spent the last few years of her life at Lofland Lifecare in Seaford suffering from Alzheimer's where she died peacefully. Even though, her family will miss her very much, they have memories of a mother that never asked for a thing for herself but showed them how to live a Godly life giving to others which is giving to God. They know it is time for her to go and be "Crowned in Glory." A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 11th at 3:30 p.m. at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher Street, Frankford, , where friends may call after 1:30 p.m. Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 15th at 10 a.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
