Georgetown - Gertrude Dickerson Murray passed away peacefully on March 25, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. Gertrude was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 12, 1936. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Alden B. Murray in 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents, James and Olivia Dickerson; and a sister, Eleanor Dickerson Wilson. She was a 1954 graduate of Laurel High School and a 1957 graduate of the Milford Memorial Hospital Nursing School, followed by five years of service as a Registered Nurse at Milford Memorial Hospital. For the next 25 years until 1992, Gertrude served as a very loyal and dedicated Registered Nurse for Dr. A.J. Wildberger in Georgetown. Gertrude by all accounts was a very patriotic and giving person as demonstrated by her longtime service as an auxiliary member of the American Legion Post #8 and Ambulance Station #93. She was also a past auxiliary member of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Company Station #77, a very proud supporter of the United States Navy and Army, a 20 year volunteer at the CHEER Center and Delaware Hospice, as well as a dedicated member of the Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Other professional associations included membership with the American Association of Retired Persons and the Laurel High School Alumni Association Class of 1954. Furthermore and most significantly, she was a lifelong supporter and fan of the Georgetown Little League, spending countless hours happily watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren play on those sacred fields. However, nothing was ever more important to Gertrude than her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her four children, Karen Murray West and husband Bill of Milton, Sandra Murray Wilgus and husband Michael of Bethany Beach, Joanne Murray Wilkins and husband Danny of Georgetown, and United States Army Colonel (Retired) Mark A. Murray and wife Betsy of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Eileen Woodland of Frederica, Rita Procino of Laurel and Kay Dill of Georgetown; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and one on the way. Celebration of Life/Funeral Services will be held March 30, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, Delaware 19947. Family and friends may call after 4 p.m. Interment will be Private in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Georgetown EMS/Ambulance Station # 93, 406 N. Front St., Georgetown, DE 19947 and/or Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
