Gerald R. 'Jerry' Altemus, 66

HARTLY - Gerald R. "Jerry" Altemus, of Hartly, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008, at his home with family. He was 66.

He was born Feb. 21, 1942, in Wilmington, to Harry and Vivian (Hollsinger) Altemus.

Jerry stared working for Carl King at the age 20 as an oil driver and moving up to transport driver and then produce trucks. In 1975, he stopped driving over the road and started dispatching for Carl King Express. In 1982, he started First State Truck Brokers. Jerry was very loyal to his work no matter what he did.

In his spare time he loved working in his yard and working with his trucks.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Altemus; two sisters, Janet Thomas and Betty Williams; and his brother, Harry Altemus Jr.

Jerry is survived by his mother, Vivian Altemus of Newark; son and his wife, Rodney and Pam Altemus of Harrington; son and his wife, Donald and Fran Altemus of Clayton; grandchildren, Amanda, Steven and Joshua; sister, Dorthy Megonigal of Dover; brother, Richard Altemus of Chesapeake City, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Trader Funeral Home, Dover.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Camden-Wyoming Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 186, Camden, DE 19934.
