ROCK HALL, Md. - George William Schumaker Jr. of Rock Hall, husband of Grayce Z. Schumaker, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, in Rock Hall. He was 88.
He was born Feb. 20, 1919, son of the late George William Schumaker Sr. and Bertha Bowles, and spent his childhood in Maniunck, Pa.
George and Grayce were married December 1950, and spent more than a half century of joy together.
George entered the Navy in 1939, and achieved the rank of Boatswain"s Mate 1st Class. He served on the USS Constitution, the USS New York and the USS Alcyone.
Mr. Schumaker was also in the African, European and Pacific theaters, and earned the following awards: African Campaign, European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign, Asiatic /Pacific Campaign, Fleet Defense Medal, Asian Occupation Service Medal, World War II Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Award.
After leaving the Navy in 1945, he worked in several jobs before settling into his career at WCAU, Philadelphia. George was an audio/visual technician for 32 years, retiring in October 1983.
George and Grayce settled in Rock Hall in September 1987, where they had the pleasure of knowing many wonderful friends. They were supported by, as well as helped support the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Mr. Schumaker is survived by his children, Carl W. Schumaker and his wife Mary, George W.R. Schumaker and his wife Ellen, and Virginia A. (Schumaker) Baralus and her husband William; and nine grandchildren, Danielle Schumaker, Michelle Schumaker, Matthew Schumaker, Jessica Schumaker, Sarah Schumaker, David Schumaker, Christopher Baralus, Nicholas Baralus and Alexander Baralus.
Family was the most important thing to him.
George"s memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wesley Chapel.
