NEWARK - Ernesto N. Cuba, M.D., of Newark, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 1, 2009, with his wife and family members at his side. Dr. Cuba was born in Manila, Philippines, on Nov. 17, 1934. He completed medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. After residencies in Connecticut and New York, he came to Delaware in 1963 with his family. He was employed by the State of Delaware as a psychiatrist for the past 46 years and worked in various facilities such as the Delaware State Hospital and Psychiatric Center, the Mental Hygiene Clinic in Dover and the Stockley Center and Mental Hygiene Clinic in Georgetown. He took great pride in his work and, most recently, was a vital part of establishing several group homes for the people he served in New Castle County under Resources for Human Development. He treasured his family and friends, and was an avid fisherman. Many will remember his fantastic fishing adventures and the colorful stories that accompanied them. He is survived by his wife, Florence Wyre-Cuba; his three daughters, Christine Floyd, Corinne Ventura and Cynthia Dabrowski; step-children, Lisa Fleetwood-Smith and John Messick, Jr; seven grandchildren, Michael Perry, Christopher Perry, Daniel Ventura, Lauren Ventura, Breanne Bynum, Kristen Dabrowski and Natasha Dabrowski; and two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Aiden Perry. He is predeceased by his parents and two brothers, all of the Philippines. A private ceremony will be held for immediate family. A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a later date for friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Resources for Human Development at 1800 N. Jefferson St., Wilmington, DE 19802. You may mourn him, but we ask that you celebrate his exuberant life and the wonderful memories he gave us all.
