HARRINGTON - Erik Van Smith passed away Aug. 22, 2018 at Bayhealth – Milford Memorial. He was the son of the late Arthur and Gertrude Smith.
Erik spent many years proudly serving with the North Plainfield, N.J. fire department; he always felt a kinship with any fellow fireman regardless where they were from. Later, he was a member of the Forrest Hill Horseshoe Club of Maryland.
Erik started work with Eastern Stainless Steel Company as a salesman prior to turning his woodworking hobby into a full time manufacturing company, Hartman Woodcraft.
In his spare time, Erik enjoyed dirt track racing, Nascar, ice hockey and computer games such as Pinball. He liked to spend time sitting in his three season room watching wildlife. Erik was great debater who gave good advice when needed. He portrayed a tough exterior but those who knew him, saw his generous heart and devotion to his family.
Erik is survived by his loving wife and life partner of 41 years, Daryl Smith; sister, Sandy; nephew, Michael Pear; nieces, Jessica Herrman and Laura Varela; great nephews, Christopher Pear and James Varela; and great nieces, Brighid Varela and Rhianna Varela.
