Dr. Joseph Samuel Bellmeyer DOVER - Dr. Joseph Samuel Bellmeyer, of Dover, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Westminster Village. He was 98. Dr. Bellmeyer was born March 1, 1911, in Wilmington, to the late Samuel Bellmeyer and Elizabeth Flack Bellmeyer. He received his MBA in business from Bucknell University. He also received an honorary doctorate from Wesley College. He was Vice President for 25 years for Playtex in Dover and acted on the company's behalf to start up new plants around the world. After his retirement he became a Canadian Citizen where he taught high school English for many years. He came back to America where he became a dual citizen of both countries. Dr. Bellmeyer then taught English at Wesley College. He volunteered in many different areas. He organized prayer breakfasts and was a founding member of United Methodist men at Wesley United Methodist Church. He also served on many boards and committees at Wesley Church. Dr. Bellmeyer was on the board of trustees at Wesley College for over 20 years and had the Honors House Residency named in his behalf. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Christ Episcopal Church, both of Dover, and the United Church of Canada in Arnprior, Ontario. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for well over 50 years. Dr. Bellmeyer was an avid golfer and bridge player and loved to summer in Ontario and had done so through last summer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Grove Bellmeyer, on Oct. 29, 1994; and his grandson, David Nogan, on Feb. 11, 1989. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Everett and her husband Walter of Lewisburg, Pa.; a granddaughter, Mary Jo Shields and her husband Michael; a grandson, Michael Nogan and his wife Susan; and four great-grandchildren, Garrett and Ann Caroline Shields, and Zachary and Jessica Nogan. Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 16, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover.
