DOVER, DE - Diane B. Smith passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 3, 1937 to the late Lillian Garvey Burlew and Irvin Roy Burlew.
She was born and raised in Bridgeton, New Jersey, as one of seven siblings. In 1956 she married the love of her life, Jack and the two of them traveled the world during Jack's 27 years in the Air Force. A few of the 19 places they were stationed include Panama Canal Zone, Roswell, New Mexico, Ramstein, Germany and finally was stationed at Dover Air Force Base where her husband retired.
In 1976, she attended Terry Campus at Delaware Technical College and received her LPN in nursing. In 1982, Mrs. Smith graduated from Delaware State College with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She worked as a Charge Nurse at Kent General for 6 months, and went on to work at a private home health care agency for a couple years. Mrs. Smith became a Public Health Nurse in the James T. Williams Service Center in Dover. She retired after 18 years of working for the State in 2003.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jack Smith; daughter, LuAnne S. Shockley (Barry) of Harrington, DE; sister, Mary Pucket, of Salt Lake City, UT; grandchildren, Courtney Ammons (Eric), Chelsea Gazette (Craig), and Sean Holjes; great grandchildren, Austen Gazette & Graycen Gazette; Mrs. Smith is also remembered by many nieces and nephews and dear, life long family friends.
Friends may call Thursday, December 15, 2022 evening from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd., Dover. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, on Friday, December 16, 2022 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 113 Lotus Street, Dover, DE 19901. Burial will follow the funeral services at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, in Dover, DE.
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made in her honor to Delaware Hospice.
