HARRINGTON - Dewain Saulsbury Downes passed away at home in Somerset, N.J. on Friday, May 2, 2015. Born in Milford, April 3, 1925, Dewain was raised in Harrington where he often spoke fondly of spending long summers on his grandfather's farm. He moved to Jersey City, N.J., where he lived for a number of years before moving to Somerset, N.J., where he was a longtime resident. Dewain proudly served his country during World War II with the United States Army, taking part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy at Utah Beach. He was a member of the Army Railroad Battalion, shuttling many runs of food and ammunition to our soldiers in the front lines in Europe during the war. Dewain had worked for many years with the Jersey Central Railroad of N.J. and Conrail prior to his retirement. He was a member in good standing of the Brotherhood of Masons Raritan Valley Lodge #46 as well as the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Lodge #48. Dewain will be sadly missed by his family, many close friends and his beloved cats. Always a gentleman, Dewain was kind and respectful to everyone he met. He was truly one of the Greatest Generation in every respect. Dewain was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Edith Harriet Downes; his step-daughter, Ruth Saulsbury Leggett; his son, Dewain G. Pippin; his sisters, Dorothy Jeanette Wyatt of Harrington, Del., Helen Muth, Elizabeth May Hill; his great-grandchild, Kaila, and his parents and grandparents of Harrington Del. including his grandfather, Sheriff Arley Saulsbury of Kent County Del. Surviving him are his daughters, Diane Susan Dinnegan of Howell, N.J., Meredith V. Downes of Somerville, N.J.; his son, Dewain R. Downes of Somerset, N.J.; his brother, Rev. George Asbury Downes III of Belleville, N.J.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends and family paid their respects May 7th 2015 at the Boylan Funeral Home, New Brunswick, N.J. A military funeral and interment took place May 8th 2015 at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetary in Arneytown, N.J., where Dewain's loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Edith H. Downes, was laid to rest with him. Donations may be made to your local animal shelter or animal rescue group in Dewain's name. Please consider adopting and providing a loving home to a pet from your local animal shelter. Dewain would thank you from the bottom of his heart.
