David Strong Fleming

DAGSBORO - David Strong Fleming, formerly of Leonia, N.J., died suddenly on Monday, July 22, 2013. He was the son of Ilene and Thomas Fleming. David attended Trinity School in New York City and Valley Forge Military Academy in New Jersey. He served in the US Army, during which time he studied at the Army Language School in Monterey, CA. David spoke five different languages fluently. David received a B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University, N.Y., and taught school in Rye Neck, N.Y. In 1966 he joined the Geography Department at Southern Connecticut University in New Haven, Conn., where he taught for 26 years. After retirement, he substituted in the New York City school system, and as an Adjunct Professor of History at William Paterson College, N.J. David loved teaching and inspired others with his knowledge, with and enthusiasm in the classroom. His avocations were backpacking and repairing VW cars. He led the Southern Connecticut Outing Club on many adventures backpacking in the Adirondacks and White Mountains and white water canoeing on the Delaware River. He traveled extensively with his family, exploring Mexico, the Yucatan, and the eastern Canadian provinces. He is survived by his brother, Thomas and his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Valerie and Elizabeth; and six grandchildren, Rachel, Joshua, John Eric and William Altman, Jared and Jordana Graveley, and two nephews, Thomas and Jeffrey. David was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla Evelyn Reich Fleming, of Ridgewood, N.J., by five days. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation in David's name to the charity of your choice. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966.
