MCLEANSVILLE, N.C. - Clare Marie (Wherrity) McLaughlin, 88, of McLeansville, N.C., died Sept. 14, 2014. Born in Phila., Pa., she was the daughter of the late John P. and Frances(Kelly) Wherrity. Besides her parents, Clare was preceded in death by her loving husband, Francis McLaughlin in March 1993; as well as three sisters and five brothers. Clare, as a young woman, worked as a Comptrometer at Strawbridge & Clothier in Phila. She enjoyed accounting work throughout her life and could do figures in her head without a calculator. During WWII she worked, for some time, as a welder at the Phila. Naval Yard. Her other passions were sewing and caring for others. At the age of 48 she acquired her LPN License and worked in hospitals and also as a caregiver for a few elderly patients. In her much later years she worked at a fabric shop in Northfield, N.J., which she very much loved. Clare's favorite flower was the Violet. It was at the age of nine she came upon fields of violets in Pa. – a memory she dearly treasured. Clare is survived by two sons, Andrew Jackson (Joyce) of Phila., Pa., Kevin Jackson (Lucy) of Stratford, N.J.; and a daughter, Michelle Hyatt (Ken) of McLeansville, N.C. with whom she lived for the past eight years; seven granddaughters, five grandsons, four great-granddaughters, ten great-grandsons; nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will 12 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St, Dover, Del. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover, Del.
