Charles E. Whitehurst Sr.

MAGNOLIA - Charles E. Whitehurst Sr., passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 89. Charles was born on Sept. 30, 1921, in Norfolk, Va., son of the late Florence and Charles E. Whitehurst. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp and U.S. Air Force from 1940 to 1966 and retired as a Master Sergeant, seeing action as an armorer on B24's in WWII in Europe, North Africa and Burma. He served in the Korean Conflict among others. After his retirement from the military, he engaged in home construction with his good friend Arlen George Parrot, subsequently working at International Playtex as a millwright. He retired from Leonard Pevar Company in 1985, where he was a construction superintendent. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, NASCAR, the Redskins and Phillies baseball. Charles was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge of Dover. Charles was predeceased by his wife, Roberta Stewart Watson Whitehurst; a daughter, Roberta Schussler; and a brother, James Whitehurst. He is survived by his companion, Pauline Wood; a son, Charles E. Whitehurst Jr. of Dover; and a niece, Laurie Holt of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Services will begin with a Masonic service at 12:45 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m., Friday, April 22, in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.
