DOVER - Bonnie McGehee Brown, of Dover, died Aug. 1, 2011, at Newark Manor Nursing Home. She was 92. Mrs. Brown was born Bonnie Belle Smith on April 19,1919, to the late Walter W. Smith and Willie Belle Ross Smith. She was the first child born in the newly-incorporated city of West Memphis, Ark. In 1976, Bonnie cut the West Memphis Bicentennial cake in recognition of her special place in West Memphis history. She was one of ten children and the last surviving sibling. In 1941, Bonnie married Charles Lewis McGehee of Paris, Tenn. They both worked at Oak Ridge, Tenn., on the Manhattan Project during WWII. After the war they moved to Memphis and raised a family until Charles' death in 1973. Bonnie worked for 25 years at Memphis State University (The University of Memphis) as a staff member of the School of Arts and Sciences. She retired in 1984 and moved with her daughter's family to Dover. While bowling, Bonnie met and soon fell in love with and married Dr. Robert R. Brown, a widower and retired industrial chemist. They were married for 23 years and Dr. Brown survives her. Bonnie was an avid bridge player, life-long fisherman, gardener and Jumble puzzle fan. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dover. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brown is survived by her daughters, Lynda M.Jerit of Oak Park, Ill., and Laura M. Kensey of Bow, N.H.; her grandchildren, Erica Czerepak of North Andover, Mass., and Nicholas Kensey of East Hampton, Conn.; as well as numerous step-children, step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
