Betty Jane Griffin Canon, 65
Laurel - Betty Jane Griffin Cannon, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, in her Laurel Commons home. She was 65. Born here, she was the daughter of the late Willie Collins and Madeline Griffin Ennis and the stepdaughter of the late Dallas Ennis. Betty attended the former William C. Jason Comprehensive High School in Georgetown. She was employed by several area food processing facilities. A caretaker for the elderly, she was founding member of Community Efforts, a grassroots organization that helps the elderly and disabled in the Laurel and Seaford communities. Throughout her life, she attended St. Matthews First Baptist Church in Laurel and other area churches. Her survivors include seven children, Timothy (Dawn) Cannon of Ft. Meade, Md., Angela Cannon, Wilmington, N.C., Stephanie (William) Cannon-Jones of Owings Mills, Md., Cheryl Doughty of Concord, Gregory Gibbs of Rehoboth, Deborah Mason of Milford, and Terrance Cannon of Laurel; a stepdaughter, Linda Horsey Braxton of Providence, R.I., 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Eben (Lidia) Griffin of Bedford, England; and one sister, Dorene Gumby of Laurel; two aunts, Leona Glenn of San Ramon, Cali., and Helen (Alfred) Anderson of Atlantic, Va.; two special cousins who helped care for her, Mary Bolden of Laurel and Maudrece "Sister" Evans of Seaford and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Wilson "Buddy" Ennis, and sister, Delores E. Dixon. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews First Baptist Church in Laurel, where friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, two hours prior to the service.
