Bernice Hortense West

LAUREL - Bernice Hortense West, of Laurel, passed away on Wed. Sept. 8, 2010, at her home. She was 68 years old. She was born May 1, 1942 in Laurel, Del., the daughter of the late Vassa T. and Addie L. Oney West. Bernice graduated from William C. Jason High School, Class of 1960. She earned her Bachelor of Science in 1965 from Delaware State College. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and talking with friends. She was a member of St. John A.M. E. Zion Church in Laurel. She is survived by a son, Eugene West of Laurel, whom she gave devoted care; a brother, Kermit West of Smyrna; a sister, Shirley Dillard of Wilmington; many nieces, nephews, and a devoted nephew, Donald West of Laurel. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin West; and a sister, Ruth Brinkley. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church at Ross Point, Laurel, DE,. with Rev. Ida Y. Ositelu officiating. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
