Bernard 'Bernie' W. Johnson, 89
HARTLY - Bernard "Bernie" W. Johnson passed away peacefully on December 10, 2020. He was born on June 28, 1931 in Plattsburgh, New York, the son of Herbert Johnson and Alice Bruitte Johnson.
Bernie proudly served his country retiring from the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam War the year of 1965-1966.
He is survived by his children, Patricia Scribner (Carlos), Gary Johnson (Christine), Steven Johnson (Lisa), Alan Johnson (Debbie), Jeffery Johnson, and Donna Kelley (Herbert); 13 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two special sister-in-laws, Cora Johnson of Altona, New York and Edna Sillis of Great Massingham, England; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his loving wife, Doris "Barbara" Johnson who died on June 14, 2016; his grandson, Kyle Johnson who died on December 30, 2014; and his siblings, Bernyce Jaramillo, Herbert Johnson, John Johnson, Richard Johnson, Lawrence Johnson, Gerald Johnson, and William Johnson.
After retiring from the military he was employed by the State of Delaware at the Department of Corrections in Smyrna and also with Southern States Co-op in Clayton.
Since retiring permanently, Bernie enjoyed visiting the many battle fields of the U.S. Civil War, traveling to New England in the fall and upstate New York. He was most happy in his garden tending to his plantings and flowers.
As an avid reader he always had a book in progress. The histories of the Native American Indian and the U.S. Civil War were his main interests.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna. Memorial services will begin at 12 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Shriners Childrens Hospital 2900 Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, Florida 33607.
