Bernard Layton Grothues, 80

DOVER - Bernard Layton Grothues of Dover, formerly of New Jersey, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, surrounded by his loving family. He was 80.

He was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Leonia, N.J., son of the late Herman and Anna (Coffee) Grothues.

Bernard served his country proudly in the U.S. Army.

He retired as an independent carpet installer.

Bernard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, and was a former member of the Holy Name Society.

He was a man with exceptional character, reverence to God, and had the highest work ethics.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Grothues.

He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 58 years, Jacqueline Grothues; beloved children, Glenn Grothues of Paramus, N.J., Donna Mensing and her husband Cliff of Chester, N.J., Stephanie Fasolino and her husband John of Allen, Texas, Craig Grothues of Dumont, N.J., and Lynn Matthew and her husband Drew of West Chester, Pa.; a beloved sister, Bernice Kennelly and her husband Ed of Leonia; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He gave of himself without wanting in return.

He laughed easily and will be missed by so many.

A memorial service was held at the Beaugard Funeral Home, River Edge, N.J.

Burial will be at a later date in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the America Heart Association, 1151 Walker Road, Suite 202, Dover, DE 19904.

Local arrangements are by Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming.
