SEAFORD - Bennett D. Robertson, Sr, 95, formerly of Salisbury and Seaford, Del. and short time resident of Gull Creek Senior Center, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015 with his daughter and granddaughter by his side at AGH in Berlin. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Talmadge Van Bennett Robertson and Lucy White Robertson. Bennett (BD) worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad later becoming Amtrak for over 40 years with his final position being a Conductor on the Northeast Corridor from Washington DC to New York City. He loved his job and met many famous people including President Harry Truman, who gave him his autograph on the Army-Navy Football Game menu from November 29, 1947. He loved to take his family with him on the trips, including his son, daughter and grandchildren. After retiring many days were spent fishing and tending to his garden. Lots of folks in Salisbury enjoyed his tomatoes and other vegetables as he grew many more than he could eat. He was a loving caregiver to his wife Margaret who had been in poor health for many years before she passed in 1999. Bennett took up traveling in his nineties and went on 7 cruises with one of his favorites being Alaska. After the cruise he took the Coast Starlight train from Seattle to San Francisco. He also enjoyed his trips to Myrtle Beach and often remarked, "most people my age are in nursing homes and I am sitting on the beach." Bennett was a member of the Centennial Lodge No. 221, A.F.& A.M. becoming a full Brother on September 30, 1948. He held various offices and was active into his eighties. Bennett was also a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Eastern Shore Forest No. 53 and attended functions right up to the Labor Day picnic of this year. Being a World War II veteran with 2 Purple Hearts he was with the 45th Infantry in the European Campaign, he was transferred to the 3354th QM Trucking Company after the 2nd Purple Heart. An Honorable Discharge was given on September 30, 1945 and he returned to the railroad. As a qualified Veteran he joined the Nanticoke Post 6 American Legion in Seaford after he moved to Delaware. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Bunting Robertson. Step-Mother, Mary Robertson and 4 half-siblings of Baltimore. Bennett is survived by his daughter, Lynn Widdowson (Leon) of Seaford, DE; his son, Bennett D. Robertson, Jr. of Crisfield; three grandchildren, Jessie Rhodes Mudge (Chris) of Salisbury, David T. Rhodes, Jr. (Tara) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Ashley Ellen Robertson and fiancée, Bryan Boutell of Nashville, TN; two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Tasi Mudge of Salisbury. Cousin Nancy Robertson of Salisbury, Bill & Barbara Robertson of Salisbury, Lee Robertson of Bivale, and numerous others from Baltimore. A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Rev. Oren Perdue will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Parsons Cemetery, Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Air Mobility Command Museum, 1301 Heritage Road, Dover AFB 19902-5301 or the Delaware Aviation Museum, 21781 Aviation Avenue, Georgetown, DE 19947.
