Arthur E. (Gene) 'Pop' Stayton HARRINGTON - Arthur E. (Gene) "Pop" Stayton, of Harrington, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010. He was 88. He was born in Milford to the late Arthur and Annie Virginia Stayton. Mr. Stayton served his country proudly by spending 5 ½ years in the Armed Forces serving in England, France, and Germany in World War II. After the war, he spent 15 years as a contractor and builder. He then spent 22 years as a plant manager for Atlantic Concrete in Harrington retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Harrington Senior Center and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6483. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing camping, NASCAR, and making wood crafts. He also liked to travel with his wife and had the distinction of visiting every state as well as Canada and Mexico. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Lynn; brothers, Homer, Wilson, Herbert, and Willard Stayton; and sisters, Ruth Joseph, Delema Wilson, Sarah Williamson, and Ethel Sherman. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elizabeth D. "Betty" Stayton of Harrington; son and daughter-in-law, John Eugene and Joyce Stayton of Harrington; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Vitas Hospice, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713. Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.
